Overview of Parthian History

The origins of the Parthians are obscure. It is unclear whether they were originally inhabitants of the Seleucid empire who rebelled, or invaders who carved out their own state at the Seleucids’ expense. This debate, which is rooted in the conflicting testimonies of Strabo and Justin on the one hand and Arrian on the other, continues apace in the scholarly literature.
